Personalized Learning: Thinking Beyond Adaptive Learning Software

Although the concept of “personalized learning” has gained considerable traction, there is still much confusion regarding what this complex set of ideas actually means. To further muddy the waters, many educational software companies claim that their product alone can personalize instruction for all students. Fortunately, we have seen a convergence among definitions and frameworks for personalized learning that share common themes and attributes, those that go well beyond a software solution. We now also have the opportunity to learn from innovative schools across the nation that have effectively leveraged personalized learning to help reach their goals. In this session, participants will explore the rapidly emerging concept of personalized learning along with justifications for its role in transformative education. Through an examination of current research and practical examples of personalized learning in action, participants will identify key elements of personalization and how these approaches can advance learning for all students. Some ideas explored will include: dynamic learner profiles, flexible pathways and progressions, learner agency, and blended learning environments that support personalized learning. Attendees will leave this session with a firm grasp of personalized learning along with practical takeaways that they can readily implement in their educational settings.

This session is designed to help educators show their students how they can use iPad to support creativity. It focuses on three phases of the creative process—brainstorming, gathering inspirational resources, and telling compelling stories—that can help make learning more meaningful for students. Flipped learning can and will have a profound impact on you and your students. Trust us - we started down this path in our algebra classes almost 5 years ago, and we haven’t looked back since! It’s become one of the best things we have undertaken to grow as professionals and better serve our students.

If you are thinking of flipping your classroom or even just a single lesson or unit, you will come away with ideas for immediate implementation of flipped learning. We have discovered the “magic sauce” that makes the flipped classroom successful. We will share the pitfalls to avoid, how to efficiently create teacher-produced videos, ways to guide students to use video instruction effectively, how to anticipate student issues and questions, and the importance of using daily formative assessment with immediate feedback. We also will dispel the myth that technology and videos will replace the teacher since we are still the “center of the equation” in our classrooms but now with the dual roles of both teacher and coach.

Don’t build a Maker Space, Found a Design Firm

Is your goal to train the next furnace assembly person, the next furnace maintenance person, or the creator of Nest? In our new “Economy of Ideas”, we need to train students how to develop creative solutions to real-world problems, not just a baseline level of competency with soon-to-be-replaced technology. To accomplish this goal, we propose using the analogy of a Design Firm, rather than that of a Maker Space. In our scenario, students choose (or are assigned) an area to work in, have outside adult stakeholders they are responsible to, identify real problems that exist in the area, learn to use the tools they need to accomplish their goal, and must present their solutions to the stakeholders. This approach values a diverse skill set - interviewing and observing people, analysis in teams, creativity and sketching, persuasive presentation of solutions - in addition to engineering/”making”. Additionally, students who might not think of themselves as looking like “traditional” engineers are now invested in a problem they care about and are motivated to learn whatever tools they need to complete the project, despite any stigmas. This approach has grown significantly at the university level and we believe it can be adopted at the K-12 level. This interactive session will describe an implementation of this model, demand creative work from the audience, and offer lessons to be shared for those interested.

Silicon Valley is widely recognized as the world's premier hub of innovative design and development. Entrepreneurship and technology is routinely espoused by startup hopefuls, as well as the very largest of corporations world wide. Yet, before five years ago, almost none of our public Silicon Valley schools offered classes to reflect this culture or give opportunity to students seeking to participate in such endeavors. SEARCH class (Science Enrichment And Research) works to merge learning science with business and technology to teach innovation en masse. This semester long science elective class is offered to all 7th and 8th grade students at Joaquin Miller Middle School, a part of the Cupertino Union School District. The presentation will be about my journey as a classroom teacher to create and implement this class that makes applicable all science learned by imposing a business perspective on every student driven project and truly integrate the use of technology for collaborative and creative means. A sampling of the computer applications most useful for the prototyping needs of students and insight into the outcomes that result when students conduct genuine, collaborative, scientific research will be discussed. Hint: students learn more about themselves than anything else in a class like this. SEARCH class provides students a metaphorical playground to explore what it means to bring an idea to fruition. This is the ethos of Silicon Valley.

Attendees of this presentation will learn the basics of game-based learning and gamified instruction and the differences between these two concepts. Using a series of anchor games (like anchor papers in writing instruction), attendees will learn how to create gamified experiences for their students using a number of different models and will be given the opportunity to develop a simple lesson model to take back to their schools.
